The last treatment that avoids the loss of vision in patients with queratocono.
The CROSS-LINKING Is the unique technique of reinforcing corneal, able to generate new unions or bridges between fibers of the colágeno in the cornea, that allows significantly to increase the rigidity in patients with queratocono.
Procedure: after retiring the superficial cells of the cornea, instila riboflavin or B2 vitamin (C3-R), in drops. The application of an ultraviolet light (GRAPE 375 NM), during 30 minutes generates a photosensitive reaction along with riboflavin and generates new connections between the colágenas fibers that confer rigidity or corneal reinforcing. This new treatment has surpassed the different stages from investigation during last the 13 years, mainly in Germany, until its present approval, and has demonstrated that:
- It increases the rigidity of the cornea.
- It stops the evolution of queratocono.
- In more than half of the cases, it reduces the curvature of the cornea and improves the visual sharpness.
Indication:
It must be applied in queratocono, or ectasias corneales of any type (like the secondary one to LASIK) Since it stops the evolution of the deformity of the cornea, it is important to apply it the sooner and to obtain it the early detection with equipment of measurement of the corneal architecture as they orbscan or the topography is necessary. |
